With almost 10 births per 1000 citizens, Jena maintains the highest birth-rate in Thuringia. With a relatively low average age of the general population it is the 'youngest' city in the new federal states; nearly 13.000 of the over 100.000 citizens are children and youths under the age of 18. In addition, almost twice as many students are enrolled in both universities.
